COACH BIOS

Janine Giles – Head Coach
Janine lived in Canmore since 2003 and is currently a PhD student in political science at the University of Calgary. She is a long-time swimmer who started with the Nanton Marlins Swim Club before joining the Cascade Swim Club during high school. At that time she held junior national qualifying times in the 50, 100, 200 and 400 m freestyle events. Janine looks forward to brining her swim skills to the Coho Swim Club. Her main goal is to continue the tradition of fostering an environment where swimmers can develop their talent and get a sense of joy from attending practices and swim meets. Outside swimming, Janine enjoys outdoor pursuits such as skiing, miking and climbing. She also teaches courses on Canadian politics at the University of Calgary and is a classical piano instructor. Jaelyn Birch – Assistant Coach
I have lived in Canmore pretty much all my life. I have always been active and have participated in many sports. Throughout high school I played basketball and was also on the track and cross-country running teams. I cross-country skied until Grade 10 and competed in the Alberta Winter Games in 2002 and 2004. I started swimming with the Canmore Cohos when I was 12 years old and swam until I graduated from high school in 2007. Over the six years swimming with the Cohos I set many club records, won club awards and earned many meet, provincial and Alberta Summer Games medals. In my last year swimming I won the ASSA Most Valuable Female Swimmer award. After graduating I decided to go to the University of Lethbridge where I am currently taking New Media classes. I was given a spot on the University of Lethbridge swim team and will be returning to swim with the team in the fall. I coached with the Coho Swim Club last year and this will be my second year coaching for the club. I'm looking forward to another fun and exciting season.

Jason Donelon – Assistant Coach
I'm a huge movie fan, I love to hang out and watch movies and I will watch just about any kind of movie. If I'm not at the pool or I'm not working on homework, then I'm watching movies or at the gym. I love music also, because music is one of the few ways for me to express myself to everyone. I love to coach, I have been teaching Red Cross swimming lessons for the last year or so, and helping out the Riptides Swim Club. I have been a part of the competitive swimming world since I was 6. At the age of 6 I joined the Canmore Cohos and swam with them until I was 14. In between 1997 and 2005, I was lucky to be a part of the club, we went on to win provincials one year and I had a blast, met so many people and had lots of fun, which is what it's all about. Then I joined up and swam with the Riptides, managing to qualify for Age Group Nationals twice and just barely missed attending Western Canadian Swimming Championships. Now I help out with Riptides and I teach lessons while working as a local lifeguard. Once I am done school, I hope to travel the world and see the culture with my own eyes. Then once I feel confident enough, I will go back to school and train to get my EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic) degree and from then on I don't know what will happen.

Goals: While coaching this sumer with the Cohos, I have one main goal and that is to have fun coaching and make sure the swimmers have fun swimming. I want to pass on my knowledge of swimming to the swimmers of the club and hope that they can use it to their advantage. I am glad to be back with the Cohos and I hope we can have a fun and exciting season!
